P.J. Proby Was Back In Town!!
Having missed his concert in Gloucester in the UK earlier this year, last month I travelled to Stockholm to attend Jim Proby’s two concerts in the city. The first concert, the public one, was held in the nightclub Göta Källare. There were about 300 fans there. The concert started at 10.00pm; before this the DJ played some really good music for over an hour. The atmosphere was good.
Right on time, the band came on stage – Jim had brought Roger, his guitarist, from the UK. Enter Mr P … the next hour and a bit was just fantastic. His repertoire included ‘Mission Bell; ‘Question’; ‘Hold Me’; ‘I Write the Songs’; ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight’; ‘Yesterday’; ‘Without Love’; ‘Mystery Train’; ‘Tiger Man’; ‘123…’; ‘Hurt’; ‘Stagger Lee’; ‘I Will’; ‘Lonely Weekends’; ‘Niki Hoeky’; ‘Somewhere’ (one of my favourites); ‘American Trilogy’; ‘I Apologise’; and ‘Maria’. In between songs, he talked to the audience – it was fun. What an outstanding voice he still has - in my opinion, the best. The backing singers, ‘Love Letters’, were excellent in their supporting role. Apart from Roger, the musicians were Swedish - they were very good.
The audience just loved him and everyone was singing and clapping (some even dancing) – I clapped so hard I burst a blood vessel in one of my fingers! At the end of his performance, no one wanted him to leave the stage. But as they say, all good things … However, I was privileged to attend the private concert the following evening, attended by about 90 long-time fans. This was held in a Greek restaurant in Södermalm. Here the atmosphere was fantastic – very friendly and informal. Once again, Jim’s performance couldn’t be faulted. . No matter how many times you may have heard Jim sing a song, each rendition seems to be slightly different from the last. The time passed too quickly – you could listen to that voice for hours and still want to hear more. Most importantly, he looked as if he was really enjoying himself. The Greek staff in the restaurant thought he was great!
Knowing one of the concert organisers, I met Jim a couple of times during the days before the concerts. He is a very interesting and entertaining person. I wish him well and look forward to his concert tour in the UK later this year with The Searchers, Miss Billie Davis and Billy J Kramer. The tour will be visiting many different venues … try to make it to one of them, you will not regret it.
