I went out & bought the cd yesterday & I love the song but am not sure exactly what the lyrics mean.
What's your interpretation?
I think he's telling us that there just isn't anyone as talented &
controversial as Jim around anymore. Everyone is stereotyped & " mediocre" & they need someone different like Jim but Jim missed his opportunity.
"All the cards fell" so many years ago", Van took his opportunity
"saw the bus coming" but Van's  keeping on going "down the highway" ,still performing,
"still got a monkey on my back", & he still has to perform, even if he
doesn't want to,"still trying to find my way back".
Jim had a better voice but didn't have continued success "whatever happened to the way it's supposed to happen" & Van is trapped by still having to perform "and whatever happened to me".
What are your thoughts?
